The Town of Buxton.
Buxton's history as a spa town began long ago when the Romans built a settlement here to take advantage of the 'health giving' waters and thermal springs. Mary, Queen of Scots during her long periods of imprisonment visited Buxton several times in the late 16th century to cure her rheumatism.
In the 1870's Buxton seemed to grow and expand into a well-known Victorian spa town that we still enjoy today. The Opera House and the Pavilion Gardens with it's bandstand reflect a vision of bye-gone times.
In recent years Buxton has again flourished with the arrival of a university campus. The former Royal Devonshire Hospital has been acquired by the University of Derby. Buxton's pedestrianised shopping centre is now bustling with new shops and street cafes. Although small, Buxton still has an outdoor market twice a week.
